Phenomenal epi. I think Paul nailed it when he said it might be humanizing non-humans a little much sometimes when talking about the best ways to advocate for them. I feel that the difference between showing a video out in the street of a woman being raped and showing the video of a pig being abused is that the woman can literally tell her own story, in her own words, in a language that humans understand. Non-humans cannot. Yes, we as animal rights advocates can tell the story of the animals on behalf of them, but they can *never* tell their own story (like the woman can) so it just isn’t as compelling as actually showing it. Neither you nor I *lived* that animal’s story like the woman lived her own rape. I think that distinction is what affects the listener differently. I’m not sure that graphic images are always needed, but I think it’s important to remember that they are not humans and by that very nature, the approach will be different when it comes to human vs animal rights in some aspects. Also I’m really glad Dr. Taft was interviewed!
Very good point, thanks Annie!
Hi Beardies 🙂
As far as using graphic images – i myself went vegetarian wo being exposed to violent images, and again i went vegan wo the use of graphic images. I find them horrible and they simply exploit the poor animal victim again. We are OVER EXPOSED to violent graphic images, and UNDER EXPOSED to words of compassion, so i think conversations that come from the heart, and connect with people – by listening (as your guest explained) allows us as activists to create change by touching hearts and minds and ears, rather than scaring eyes and creating a way of blocking it out- to protect the viewer- and therefore creating a pathway to ignore the suffering and continue the exploitation of animals. ALSO as mentioned the notion that these violent images simply change the topic from USE to treatment- as Gary Francione was credited w pointing out- is absolutely valid! People seem to feel very happy to say they USE so-called ‘humane meat’, USE ‘free-range’ and ‘sustainable’ animals! grrrrr.. NO such thing, so change the conversation – literally TALK – rather then force horrific images on passerby’s (im not saying that’s what you are advocating for- but the ‘new’ Earthings Experience is doing this type of activism) SILENCE does not SPEAK for the animals, and neither do over used graphic images, minds and hearts are changed with the use of our minds and hearts.. ugh this comment long, if you made this far, thanks heaps! love what you guys are doing 🙂
Please comment on these seemingly absurd actions by Casey Taft.
