Great episode. On the topic of pressing the human extinction button- listening to y’all discuss it had me thinking of PETA at times. Their philosophy that it’s better to put an animal down than to have them “suffer” in a shelter. I think this came to mind because y’all used the word “suffering” quite a bit. You also noted how you both benefit from a bit of privilege so you selfishly wouldn’t want to give up your life and the things you enjoy. I’m in the same boat as you. But just like I don’t feel it’s right for us to determine that it’s okay to end a dog’s life (no matter how quickly and painlessly) just because they are in a shelter, I also don’t feel that it’s okay to make the decision to end someone else’s life just because I (the privileged one) perceive them to be “suffering.” Someone might have quite a different life than we have and still enjoy it. Also, when Paul kept saying that we humans are selfish, Andy said, “doesn’t that mean we deserve to be extinct?” But does it? Aren’t all species inherently selfish? Don’t we all value our own interests? We are all capable of being selfless, but I see the selfishness in non-human animals every day.
